DESCRIPTION

W-κ643 is a weathered, human-sized farm scarecrow assembled from a wooden support pole, crossbar, old work clothes, straw filling, and a roughly sewn head. Its construction is ordinary on inspection and contains no visible mechanical components capable of producing movement.

The face changes expression according to the condition of the field in which it is planted. When placed in open ground containing no agricultural crop, including ordinary grassland, the face settles into a visibly sad expression. When planted among actively cultivated crops such as corn, soybeans, tomatoes, or comparable food plants, the expression becomes distinctly happy.

Observed Function

Field Behavior

W-κ643 has never been observed physically traversing the space around it. Observation does not prevent its anomalous activity. When it acts, the scarecrow vanishes from its pole and reappears again almost instantaneously; no intermediate movement has ever been observed. Above-ground insects consistently avoid approaching within approximately 100 meters of the scarecrow.

Birds, squirrels, and other larger animals show no comparable avoidance behavior and may enter the same approximately 100-meter radius normally. Their mere presence does not provoke W-κ643, and simply landing on or moving among the crops has not consistently triggered a response.

If a nonhuman animal within the radius begins actively damaging the cultivated crop, W-κ643 will vanish from its pole regardless of whether it is being observed. The offending animal is then killed almost instantaneously by catastrophic bodily inversion and trauma, with W-κ643 reappearing on its pole virtually immediately afterward. The response appears tied to meaningful crop damage rather than simple proximity.

Humans are normally exempt from this response. Personnel may walk through the field, harvest crops, and consume produce without provoking W-κ643.

Mobility Testing

Movement Limitation

Testing indicates that W-κ643 cannot transition between vertically separated floors or levels through its anomalous movement. When its pole and test area were arranged so that reaching a target required movement to another floor, no relocation occurred under either direct observation or unattended monitoring conditions.

The Wonder appears to require a continuous same-level route through the surrounding environment. The mechanism behind this limitation is unknown.

INCIDENT κ643-01 — ASSAULT OF CARETAKER

Protective response toward Dr. Mara Voss

Dr. Mara Voss had been assigned to long-term observation of W-κ643 and was responsible for maintaining experimental crops within its test field. During a containment incident, another individual pursued Dr. Voss through the field and physically assaulted her. While the assault was still being observed, W-κ643 abruptly vanished from its pole. The attacker was killed almost instantly by severe dismemberment, and the scarecrow reappeared on its pole virtually immediately afterward.

No comparable response has occurred when personnel merely argue with, obstruct, or inconvenience researchers working in the field. The event suggests that W-κ643 may distinguish serious physical harm from ordinary human conflict.

INCIDENT κ643-02 — DELIBERATE CROP CONTEMPT

Attack following intentional waste and mockery

A researcher harvested produce from the test field, deliberately destroyed and discarded it, and repeatedly taunted W-κ643 while doing so. Shortly afterward, W-κ643 vanished from its pole while personnel were still present and the researcher was attacked, sustaining fatal injuries. The scarecrow reappeared on its pole almost immediately.

Previous personnel had picked, dropped, spoiled, or otherwise wasted portions of the crop without provoking an attack. The distinguishing factor appears to have been the combination of deliberate waste and behavior directed toward W-κ643 in apparent mockery or contempt.

Handling Notes

Containment and Cultivation

W-κ643 is to remain installed in a designated cultivated test field whenever practical. The field is to contain a maintained food crop, and unnecessary destruction or deliberate waste of produce within the Wonder's apparent awareness is prohibited.

At least two independent observation systems are to cover the test area during personnel activity for incident documentation; observation does not inhibit W-κ643. Staff are not to assume that W-κ643's normal tolerance of humans is unconditional. Any behavior that could reasonably be interpreted as a direct threat to a caretaker or deliberate contempt toward the cultivated crop requires immediate evacuation and review.

The relationship between W-κ643, cultivated plants, and individual human caretakers remains under investigation. Its facial expressions and selective responses indicate a level of contextual judgment exceeding simple stimulus-response behavior, but the extent of its intelligence is not yet established.
